Southeast Asia: Of Food, Nature and the Beauty of the World Around Us
Artist Statement
This project documents my recent trip to Southeast Asia - Vietnam, Thailand, and Singapore. I've wanted to go for years, fascinated by the food and culture and the lush nature to be found, and when my mom had to go to Thailand for work, it seemed only natural extend the trip to include other countries. I aimed to capture both the trip and the counties themselves; from the markets to the busy streets to the wildlife and the tourist attractions. Vietnam's Hanoi is a lively city set to the soundtrack of motorbikes and honking cars, while Halong Bay's natural beauty seems almost untouched, despite the extensive tourism. Bangkok is a sprawling city, filled with towering buildings and bustling markets, while Chang Mai seems almost sleepy in comparison, but at night it comes alive, vendors lining the streets and shoppers filling the markets. Singapore is easily the most Western of the three counties, an island populated wide a wide array of people, filled with skyscrapers and impossibly expensive high-rises, famed for its Gardens by the Bay, Marina Bay Sands hotel, and hawker centers. They have rich histories, unique cultures, and I aim to capture at least of some of that with this project.
